Impact Together: Reflections from the Citizen Science Event in Maastricht

At the Citizen Science Event in Maastricht, we met citizens, researchers, and policymakers who share a simple conviction: better futures are built with people, not just for them. Those conversations sharpened how Photo(n) can turn everyday images into participatory, privacy-aware insight.

An afternoon at Theater aan het Vrijthof reinforced why Photo(n) is being built around citizen participation, shared local knowledge, and privacy-aware visual insight.

An afternoon at Theater aan het Vrijthof reinforced why Photo(n) is being built around citizen participation, shared local knowledge, and privacy-aware visual insight.

An afternoon built on listening

Innovation does not happen in a vacuum. It grows through conversations over coffee, shared questions, and the collective effort of a community.

Our team recently spent an inspiring afternoon at Theater aan het Vrijthof for the Citizen Science Event. We were not there only to present what we have been building, but also to listen. What we found was a vibrant community of citizens, researchers, and policymakers, all eager to help shape a more participatory future.

The idea behind Photo(n)

We started Photo(n) with a simple observation: we all capture moments from our daily lives, yet most of those images remain stored away on our phones. We began to ask whether those snapshots could serve a greater purpose.

Our goal is to help transform everyday, GDPR-compliant photos into what we call "socies": visual contributions that help people participate more actively in how their communities are understood, governed, and improved. Using responsible tools designed to align with the EU AI Act, we analyze these images to generate small, actionable insights that can be shared through an open-access catalogue.

In many ways, this is our effort to help bridge the distance between the world as it is today and the more sustainable, just future we want to build together.

  • Start with everyday images that people already take and understand.
  • Keep the workflow privacy-aware, GDPR-conscious, and accountable.
  • Publish actionable insight in an open-access form that communities can use.

Why citizen science matters to us

At its core, citizen science is about opening up research. It is built on the belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute, whether by raising a new question, sharing local knowledge, or offering a perspective grounded in lived experience.

Research should serve society. When more people are invited to take part in the creation of knowledge, that knowledge becomes more relevant, more trusted, and ultimately more impactful.

The event in Maastricht reminded us why this work matters. The ideas, questions, and perspectives shared by the people we met offered a powerful example of what co-creation looks like in practice.

Paving the path together

We want to sincerely thank everyone who spent time with us, shared their curiosity, and contributed their insights. That openness to collaborate is what drives meaningful change. We left the event inspired, encouraged, and even more committed to building tools that work for and with communities.

This event is only the beginning of a much longer conversation. We invite you to follow our journey, explore our progress, and, if you are curious, consider how your own perspective might help shape what comes next. You can learn more about our work at www.photo-n.world and explore the catalogue as it continues to grow.

In this piece

  • The journal is meant to connect results and audience in a public, readable way.

Photo(n) is not trying to publish every internal signal. The blog is where we expose the right public layer: aggregate reach, insight volume, and the recurring themes that matter beyond a single post.

A public look at the difference between raw uploads, AI-generated insights, and the aggregate metrics worth sharing with everyone.

In this piece

  • Public metrics should be aggregate, not user-identifiable.
  • Insight quality matters more than raw upload volume.
